Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL), a refinery majority owned by Rio Tinto, has awarded a contract to TMT for the supply of a Boltron Autonomous Flange Bolting Robot. This engagement encompasses the delivery of the robotic system, as well as specialised site training and ongoing technical support for QAL personnel.

The implementation of Boltron technology focuses on providing an autonomous solution for critical maintenance activities. TMT engineered this system to address the specific mechanical requirements of industrial heat exchanger flanges, where precision and reliability are essential for operational continuity. This contract reflects a commitment to technical expertise and the delivery of clever engineering solutions designed for harsh industrial environments.

Boltron is currently the only robotic system capable of autonomously tightening and loosening both front and rear nuts on industrial heat exchanger flanges. Traditional maintenance methods frequently involve manual intervention to manage these hardware components, particularly when accessing rear-facing nuts. By automating the entire sequence, the Boltron system allows for complete flange management without the need for manual torque handling.

A primary driver for this contract is the reduction of workplace risk during high-intensity shutdown operations. Maintenance on live flange zones presents significant manual handling hazards and potential exposure to hazardous environments. The Boltron system removes personnel from these immediate live zones during the bolting process, directly decreasing the risk of injury. This focus on safety allows QAL to maintain progress on critical maintenance tasks while safeguarding the health of the site team.

Beyond the immediate safety benefits, the transition to autonomous bolting provides measurable gains in maintenance efficiency.
